Starlink Gen 2 Offline for a Year? Give It Time to Update

If a Starlink Gen 2 Performance dish has been offline for a long time, bringing it back online may take longer than expected. I recently experienced this after leaving my dish powered off for more than a year.
A Slow Start After More Than a Year Offline
When I powered the dish back on, it began installing an update. That seemed normal. What I did not expect was how drawn-out the overall process would become.
The system appeared to install several updates, reboot, and then begin working on another update. The downloads and installations were painfully slow, and the total time involved also included my troubleshooting and a factory reset. Because of that, I cannot attribute the entire experience to the updates alone.
Why It Looked Like a Problem
Because the dish had been offline for over a year, it apparently had multiple updates to work through. Instead of completing one quick update, it needed to catch up over several update cycles.
Each reboot made the situation more confusing. From the outside, it could look as though the system was stuck in a loop: an update would begin, the equipment would restart, and then another update would appear. With the process taking so long, it was tempting to assume something had gone wrong.
The Factory Reset Wasn't the Solution
At one point, I performed a factory reset because I thought the repeated updates might indicate a software problem. The reset did not eliminate the underlying issue, since the dish still needed to receive and install its updates.
In hindsight, the main requirement was patience. The dish had been unused for a long time, and it simply needed enough time to complete the update process.
What I Learned
- A Starlink dish that has been offline for more than a year may need to install multiple updates.
- Updates may be slow, especially when the system is catching up after a long period without service.
- Reboots during the process do not necessarily mean the dish is stuck.
- A factory reset may not help if the real issue is that the equipment still has updates to install.
- Allowing the system to remain powered on and undisturbed may be the best first step.
Give the Dish Time
The biggest lesson from this experience is that a long update process does not automatically mean the Starlink dish has failed. After being offline for over a year, my Gen 2 Performance dish needed time to work through its updates and reboots, while my own tinkering and factory reset added to the overall time involved.
If you encounter a similar situation, avoid assuming that the system is stuck too quickly. Before trying repeated resets or other troubleshooting steps, give the dish time to sit, update, and restart. In my case, patience was ultimately what allowed the system to finish catching up.
